Background
The Online Graduate Program in Shelter Medicine refers animal shelters that do not have a veterinarian of record or a staff veterinarian to state-licensed veterinarians who are willing to help them complete the EBI training. We want the veterinarians to whom we refer to be familiar with the expectations of this online training so everyone is on the same page. The University of Florida does not compensate veterinarians for this service and we suggest that you make arrangements with your local shelters as to whether you will charge a consulting fee to them for your time spent overseeing the skills of trainees or whether you will donate your time.
Taking the EBI course will familiarize you with the performance expectations and documentation required as the shelter trainees become proficient with 4 core competencies and 11 clinical skills that they must master in order to become CETs). The course requires that a local veterinarian witness shelter trainees performing each skill and sign a scoring rubric that they then submit to the online instructors of the course. Trainees further document their proficiency by submitting a self-made video of them performing each skill to the online instructors of the online course for grading and verification of competency.
It will take you several hours to complete Part 1 of online EBI course and you will be able to review Part 2 of the course but will be exempted from needing to document your clinical skills. We do suggest that you download copies of all of the scoring rubrics from Part 2 for future reference when overseeing shelter trainees as they demonstrate their clinical skills for you.
Please complete this application in its entirety in order to be considered for a scholarship. Priority for awarding these scholarships is reserved for ASV and HSVMA member veterinarians who are licensed to practice in geographically diverse locations.
